Excursion to David-Gareji
This excursion offers you a unique journey to one of the most mysterious and historically significant places in Georgia — David Gareji. The monastery complex, located on the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, is known for its impressive rock-hewn churches and stunning landscapes that will become an unforgettable backdrop for your journey. At the end of the day, we will head to Tbilisi, where you will enjoy a wine tasting in a cozy wine cellar.
1. David Gareji — The Rock Monastery
David Gareji is one of the most unique monastery complexes in Georgia, founded in the 6th century. The monastery is located in the semi-desert region of eastern Georgia, near the Azerbaijani border, and is an important historical and cultural center that combines elements of Christianity and ancient Georgian traditions.
What you will see at David Gareji:
David Gareji Monastery: Founded by Saint David Gareji in the 6th century, the monastery consists of several cave churches, residential, and monastic rooms carved directly into the rocks. A walk through the monastery grounds allows you to experience the atmosphere of the secluded life of monks.
Caves and Churches: The main caves of the monastery include the Church of Saint David with its preserved frescoes and holy images, as well as the Church of Saint George. Each cave tells its own story and creates a unique atmosphere.
Byzantine Architecture: David Gareji preserves elements of Byzantine architecture that significantly influenced the development of Georgian church architecture.
Unique Frescoes: Some of the caves are adorned with ancient frescoes depicting biblical scenes and saints. These frescoes are an important part of Georgia's Christian cultural heritage.
Panoramic Views: From the monastery, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding desert landscapes and neighboring areas of Georgia and Azerbaijan. From the top of the mountain, you can admire majestic vistas.
Throughout the tour, the guide will tell you about the history of David Gareji and its role in the spiritual life of Georgia.
2. Wine Tasting in Tbilisi
After visiting David Gareji, the excursion will continue in Tbilisi, where you will enjoy a wine tasting in one of the local wine cellars. Georgia is a country with millennia-old winemaking traditions, and wine here is not only an essential part of the cuisine but also a symbol of culture and hospitality.
What awaits you at the wine cellar:
Wine Tasting: You will have the opportunity to try several local wines, including red and white varieties, as well as unique ones from the Kakheti region and other winemaking areas of Georgia.
Chacha: In addition to wine, you will taste chacha — a traditional Georgian strong drink made from grape pomace. It is a potent yet aromatic drink that is an integral part of Georgian culture.
Georgian Cuisine: During the tasting, local snacks such as cheese, khachapuri, and pkhali will be offered, allowing you to experience the harmony of Georgian dishes and wines.
This excursion will provide you with unforgettable impressions, allowing you to touch the ancient history of Georgia, see its stunning landmarks, enjoy nature, and experience Georgian wines.
